Christmas

Still a very nice Christmas, even though we were all sick, and Hayden didn't want to open any presents.

Making cookies for Santa on Christmas Eve

The first thing Hayden pulled out of his stocking - a calculator. It was nearly impossible to get him to pay attention to anything else afterward.

"They're mine...all mine...mwaaa haaa haaa haaa haaa!!"

Just happy or still high on Tylenol Sinus? You be the judge.

Curse you Tylenol Sinus

We are all sick AGAIN. I barely slept the night before last because I was so congested. Then, I discovered Tylenol Severe Sinus made me feel a lot better during the day yesterday. So, I took a fourth dose of the stuff at 10:30 last night, thinking one good night of sleep is all I needed. Big mistake. I'm still up. It's now 9:15 in the morning. No sleep. Not the kind of no sleep that means I was waking up through the night, or that I was tossing and turning. I'm talking up with my eyes open for over twenty four hours now. And today is Christmas Eve. I've been on a bad Tylenol Sinus trip all damn night. I listened to my Ipod in bed from 1:00 am to 2:30. I watched "Chicago" on Encore until 3:30. Then, I read "Running With Scissors" until 5:00. That's when Neil got up for work. So, I talked to him for a while, then tried to will myself to sleep after he left until about 6:25 when Hayden woke up. So, now I am here with Hayden all day. On no sleep. When is this stuff going to wear off? And now I feel about a million times sicker than I was yesterday. And there's not a damn thing in the house to take but Tylenol Sinus and Nyquil. If I wasn't responsible for a small child today, I would take a hefty dose of Nyquil and let the two mighty cold medicines battle it out. May the best remedy win.

(edit - the picture file was huge, so i had to replace the picture. it's hard to make it out against the refrigerator's white background)

Size Matters

Every year, I say I want a huge tree. Like the trees you usually only see in shopping malls. That kind of tree. Think Rockefeller Center. We have very high ceilings in the living room, so even an eight foot tree looks kind of small. Last year, after we already had our tree, Neil saw a tree lot in Del Mar selling really tall trees. But, we were short on time today, so we either had to get a tree from somewhere else, or wait almost two weeks. We went to one place and before we got out of the car, we could tell they didn't have our tree. Their trees looked like shrubs compared to my pine-y vision. At the second place, we did find huge trees. Gigantic trees with $300 price tags. I probably would have tried to convince Neil, but there was no way we could get a tree that big home.

So, I opted for symmetry, forgoing, yet again, my desire for a twelve foot-plus tree. We found a perfectly nice 9 foot grand fir, loaded it up, and headed home. As we turned on to our street, I immediately saw my neighbor (not just any neighbor, but the neighbor who washes all three cars every single week and whose garage is perfectly immaculate and who always has the Christmas lights up the day after Thanksgiving and who has a pool in the backyard) standing in his driveway with his blower, clearing his perfect driveway of the needles that had fallen from his glorious twenty foot tall tree.

I looked back at our tree, and said to Neil, "Don't even bring that thing in my house."

Sleep Guilt-ing

Neil got home from work at 1:30 this morning, then was back to work before 6:30 am. He'll work until 6:00 tonight, then to school until 11:00.

I feel a sense of shame for having slept for eight straight hours...waking up and "rushing" only so I can get to the gym by 9:00, the least crowded time when they still have child care.

But, I just burned the hell out of my finger taking a zippered sweatshirt out of a very hot dryer. There is a blister. Payback is a bitch.
